The Ernest A. Schoensee Memorial Award is the most prestigious award granted by the Detroit Rose Society.  It pre-dates the American Rose Society's Bronze Honor Medal.  Traditionally it is presented at the end of the year at the Holiday Party.  It may or may not be granted annually and is an honor that was originally reserved for DRS  members who gave outstanding service to the society.
The criteria for this award has evolved over time and eventually honorees were DRS members who demonstrated continuous and longtime service to the Detroit Rose Society.

     Committee Procedure:

The president of the Detroit Rose Society selects       three current dues paying members to serve on a        secret Schoensee Award Selection Committee.

The President and the committee members are           not eligible for the annual  award.

The majority of the committee must agree on the       winner.

The winner of the award must have provided             outstanding service to the Detroit Rose Society
over a long peroid of time, but not necessarily in         the year it is awarded.

(Although not a rule of the Schoensee Award, the President of the society for a number of years has selected past recipiants of the award for the committee.  Who better to know those who have
given their best to the society?)
