On Sunday, June 10, 2006 Renee and Jan Lower, members of the Detroit Rose Society, opened their rose garden to the public for the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program.  As Garden Hosts, the Lowers volunteered their time and garden as an example of outstanding design and horticultural practice. It was distinguished this year by The Garden Conservancy when it was selected as one of the top 6 gardens in Oakland County and one of the best in the Midwest.

Renee’s enthusiasm for roses and her hard work have resulted in a garden with tiered patios and raised rose beds overlooking a Troy lake.  Garden features as well as thoughtfully planted perennials and annuals compliment the whole.  Rosarians would certainly appreciate the over 200 exhibition roses and the new Mini and Mini-Flora bed that was recently installed.

For over ten years the Garden Conservancy has sought to identify outstanding gardens and open them to the public. Many of these gardens are rarely seen by the public.  They are local and regional treasures. The Garden Conservancy is dedicated to garden preservation. The admission charged during the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program benefits National Preservation work like the rehabilitation of the gardens on Alcatraz Island as well as a non-profit organization designated by the Garden Host.

In the past Renee and Jan graciously opened their garden to the Great Lakes District after the Detroit Rose Society hosted the fall 2005 convention.  This time they generously designated The Detroit Rose Society as the non-profit organization a portion of the garden admission would benefit.

Renee requested the assistance of a few members of the Detroit Rose Society to assist her and her family in the logistics of moving visitors easily through her rose garden when it was open.  Lois Baker, Mike Kern, and Diane and Tom Schrift were on hand to help answer questions and walk visitors around the grounds.
Surprise!
The City of Troy has just awarded Jan and Renee Lower's garden their top award for the second time.  Once again the Lowers have achieved the Best Rose Garden in Troy for the year 2006.
